About GRAINS

GRAINS is a 3-year research project (2020-2022) entitled "Graphene-enhanced on-chip nanophotonics for switching and lasing applications", which is funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) under the "First Call for H.F.R.I. Research Projects to support Faculty Members and Researchers and the procurement of high-cost research equipment grant" (Project Number: HFRI-FM17-2086). Host Institution is the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Cooperating Organization is the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems (IMM), Rome Unit, of the Italian National Research Council (CNR).

The project targets the following objectives:

  • Design of functional, tightly confining, silicon waveguides enhanced by graphene, compatible with state-of-the-art photonics and 2D-material deposition technologies.
  • Design of compact traveling/standing-wave cavities/resonators enabled by graphene’s saturable absorption with tailored intrinsic quality factors and characteristic power levels in the order of 1 mW.
  • Exploration and deep theoretical mastering of the interplay between graphene’s saturable absorption and other nonlinear effects, originating both from graphene and silicon, such as the Kerr effect, Two Photon Absorption and Free Carrier Effects.
  • Demonstration of proof-of-concept devices for on-chip optically self-controlled or optically-addressed switching elements and lasing modules.
